    1. I mostly wanted to read this to get a better appreciation for YA retellings I knew the basic premise of the original Beauty the Beast and the fact that it s nothing like the Disney movie , but I was still pretty surprised at all of the added elements in the unabridged version I wasn t very huge on this story on its own, though, and would recommend reading the abridged version because some stuff either got lost in translation or was just super tedious to begin with.

    2. This is my favourite version, for two reasons mainly Belle is better characterised here, as the tale is longer, and her life and activities at Beast s palace are likewise better described, and at length And secondly, because Beast is really beastly, and it takes longer for them to come to understand each other and fall in love.My major quibbles are located by the end, as I wasn t very fond of a certain reveal about Belle and found her lack of reaction to losing her beloved Beast to a run of the [...]

    3. So, you probably know the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, which is based on the most popular BB telling by Beaumont But Beaumont abridged an earlier version, this version, by Villeneuve, and boy did she abridge it At first I thought the 2 were fairly similar, and the only things Beaumont cut Beauty s dreams of an unknown prince and a menagerie of monkeys and talking birds that followed her around And then we get to the end, where the beast is transformed, they re going to marry, and that [...]

    4. 3.5 Stars I can hardly believe this is a children s story written in 1740 The archaic words and heavy details make for a rather difficult read even for an adult I m assuming most people know at least a small amount of information on Beauty and The Beast A charming young girl is being held hostage in a castle by an ugly beast Right Nope, not entitely true That was Walt Disney s romantic version, but not exactly Madame de Villeneuve s version In this original version, there are Kings and Queens, P [...]

    5. Scholars have demonstrated that the beauty and the beast story and various reincarnations of it has existed for thousands of years So when we talk about the original version of this and other fairy tales what we really mean is the first time it was written down in some semblance of the modern way we tell the story Madame de Villeneuve s version is often known as the original beauty and the beast story using the definition above It is both wondrous and ridiculously tedious Honestly, if you want t [...]

    6. This was very different from the Disney version that I love so much It was a little wordy in spots, and the background story being told toward the end slowed down the flow of the story for me But, that being said, this was a very enjoyable read It was fun to read the original story that inspired the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, and to find the elements that were shared between the two stories

    7. I wanted to read the original story, or at least the eldest known one I really enjoyed this story It was an easy read but of course the wording is in a Victorian style All the same I enjoyed it.

    8. The Disney version of Beauty and the Beast is pretty different from the original story by Madame De Villeneuve In the Disney film, Beauty only has her father While in the original book she is one of many siblings Her two eldest sisters reminded me of Cinderella s step sisters They were very selfish, and only cared for materialistic items while beauty seemed to act like Cinderella and tried to cheer up her family and ask for love and health Another big change was the Beast In the Disney movie he [...]

    9. This is the oldest known version of Beauty and the Beast written by Gabrielle Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740 This book was adapted by Rachel Louise Lawrence and translated by James Robinson Planche.I LOVED this book I was so captivated I could hardly put it down, and I finished it in one day The words and phrasing are a bit different, because it was translated from French into English, but I found it very beautiful Chapter 10 tells the back story of how the Prince became a beast and some t [...]

    10. This book was hard to read because of the language and syntax as well as the order in which the events unfold Considering it was written around 400 years ago and translated from another language, that shouldn t be too surprising However, it took me two days to read a book that would normally only take 2 3 hours at most.Like many people I grew up reading fairy tales and Beauty and the Beast has always been a favorite In this original version fairies play a prominent role in the events that provid [...]

    11. By first glance, the cover is breathtakingly beautiful as are the illustrations with interactive elements by MinaLima throughout the book When I purchased this edition, I was aware that this version would be different from the 90s Disney animated movie that I fell in love with growing up and the Disney live movie which came out this year Villeneuve s original story was a delight to read and entertaining I was familiar with some of the story elements, but there were other elements of the tale tha [...]

    12. It was great to finally read the original story after enjoying so many film adaptations over the years It s easily my favorite fairy tale thanks to the good hearted monster theme that I love so much Some of the film versions have gotten close to faithfulness, but none that I ve seen have captured the horror of the Beast or made him seem as stupid and wholly unlikeable as he is in the novel Film versions anthropomorphize him and make him gruffly romantic, which I like, but the book is remarkable [...]

    13. In this original tale of Beauty and the Beast, we are given intricate details of the background, than any other adaptation that I ve read so far of this classic story Beauty s lineage is explained she s half fairy and princess, adopted by a merchant , we learn about the Beast and his backstory, and how the curse had befallen him Fairies, good and bad have a lot of involvement in the plot and influence most of what happens in the lives of the characters I actually preffered this version to the [...]

    14. I love traditional fairy and folk tales and really wanted to like this but unfortunately I didn t The story is divided into very distinct sections and the first part was enjoyable but the last seemed really disjointed and full of half hearted explanations and reminded me rather of an episode of Surprise Surprise or Long Lost Family but without the emotion and the fairy acting in as Cilla Black or Davina McCall The whole tale lacked the emotion that I would expect from a fairy tale love story.

    15. I was so used to the Disney version of the story Of course, the original is much different There are themes of things are not as they seem, beauty, love, and marriage This quick story packs a punch.

    16. I am a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast It has been my favourite fairy tale since I was a kid This original version was really good Laid out much differently to the films and with a lot depth into the back story.I enjoyed the back story but can never ditch the films 3

    17. Good book very different Very good and interesting book, a lot different then the Disney story is based off of but still very much enjoyable.

    18. If you love plots where every thing and person is somehow connected then you will enjoy this original version of Beauty and the Beast.

    20. A tale as old as time the line was NOT in this book And I don t know if this tale is as old as time anyways I m not a princess fan, let alone a Disney Princess fan Not that I have anything against Princesses or Disney, I enjoy the stories and have seen the films at least once but they re not my favorites nor do I know the stories well nor did I ever fancy being a Disney Princess However, I recently went and saw the Beauty and the Beast play and before attending the play, I watched the Disney mov [...]

    21. Rating 3 5de Villeneuve s version of the story introduces familiar elements of the story the daughter who takes her father s place, the enchanted rose, the enchanted castle These are elements that have been distilled down into the most famous modern version Disney s animated film.I do like that this version originates so much of the story I first encountered growing up That said, I m very grateful that later versions dispensed with the dreams where the unknown knight appeared to Beauty Those are [...]

    22. I love this tale It s really my favorite I look for different versions, from the educorated Disney s to the Jean Cocteau s movie Now I m going through literary versions, trying to go deep in the myth, and this edition is very interesting, because not only it looks very thorough but it has interesting appendices They are about the myth of Eros and Psyche, and a story about a king that was born as a pig Yes, I thought that it was strange too, but if we read them together we will find the relation, [...]

    23. Great to Read the OriginalIt was great to read the original after growing up in the 90s when Disney made their animated film While some of the story was familiar to me because of the film, I was for the most part surprised There are many elements to this version that were changed in the later version Disney used Overall, I found the story light hearted and entertaining It did have a bit of trouble making it through all of the many monologues, but I m intelligent enough to recognize that this was [...]

    25. Reading a fairy tale in its original glory can be sketchy thank you Disney However, I enjoyed Beauty and the Beast than I thought I would I liked the back story of how the prince became the Beast It made up for Beauty s bizarre backstory.

    26. I loved reading this version but as soon as the King was introduced the pace dropped and I didn t feel like I was reading a story about Beauty and the Beast loved the rest of it though

    27. This story is the original story of The Beauty and the Beast and was the inspiration for the Disney movie With that said, this story is so unlike the Disney and other versions that I wish I had known this story first There are no names, except for Beauty and Beast, but it s not difficult to keep whos who straight Add a bunch of siblings, no crazy father, some monkeys birds, a dream man, and a truly magical enchanted castle and you won t be able to stop reading this So much better, a true faity t [...]

    28. To be complete honest, I actually liked this story compared to the Disney version The reason for this is that it was interesting, and because it was a complete different storyline I loved Beauty because she was sweet and genuine, but also because she wasn t too afraid to speak her mind Towards the end the story got a little confusing for a second and also a little boring but all in all a good read.
